Optimal Break Time

CubeIf you get an hour lunch and two 15 minute work breaks during the you can spend the entire day at work and not have to actually work for more than 1 hour and 40 minutes at time.

Using the schedule below, if you start at 9:30 AM and finish at 5:30 Pm you can use the schedule break times below to break up your day into chunks that are all less than 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Start work at 9:30 AM
Work 1 hour 39 minutes
Break from 11:09 AM to 11:24 AM (15 minutes)
Work 1 hour 36 Minutes
Lunch from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM
Work 1 hour 39 Minutes
Break from 3:39 PM to 3:54 pm (15 minutes)
Work 1 hour 36 minutes
End Work at 5:30 pm

This may seem like a schedule for a person trying to get out doing real work but I find that by breaking down the day into manageable time periods that I get more done.  I plan activities to complete before the morning break, after the lunch break, etc.  When you have no plan that is when you keep thinking you’ll complete the task later.  By breaking the day into segments you can more easily schedule tasks and complete them.

When you schedule a task be completed during the day its easy to keep putting the task off with anticipation of completing the task some point later that day.  If you break up your day into work period you can schedule your time with more precision and quickly become aware of projects slipping there expected completion time.  If you expect to have a project completed by the morning break and it is not completed by the lunch break then you still have half the day to try to complete that project.  If all you had was a specific day you wanted to complete the project it might be late in the day before you realize the project  would not be completed and by then it would be too late to do anything about it.
