If you ran a unix command and then realized you should have run it as a superuser, you can run the following command out to execute your last command as sudo:

sudo !!

If you ran

/usr/sbin/useradd myNewUser

but got a permission error:

-bash: /usr/sbin/useradd: Permission denied

You can run sudo !! and the shell will actually run

sudo /usr/sbin/useradd myNewUser

Why I Stopped Using Windows

November 12, 2011 1 comment

I bought Modern Warfare 3 and tried to run it on Windows 7.  (Why do I need Steam to play the game?)  Steam is displaying an error when I try to play MW3.  These are the “troubleshooting” steps Steam is asking me to try:

That’s atleast an hours work to troubleshoot, does this seem sane to any non-windows user?  I’m running this on a boot camp partition of OS X.  MW3 ran fine the first time, now it won’t start.  Do I really need spend atleast an hour to figure this out?

GE Oven Loc On

September 28, 2010 6 comments

I have a GE oven (model #jgsp28sen2ss).  After having some work done in my kitchen, the panel on oven locked.  When I pressed any buttons the oven would respond only with the message “Loc On”.  I looked all over the net to find how to  unlock my display but they messages I saw said to press 9 and 0 together or range lock and start together.  My oven has none of these.  Through the process of elimination I figured out to unlock the oven press the Up and Down arrow simultaneous.  That will unlock the display.

Bush Tax Cuts – What the argument is really about.

September 13, 2010 Leave a comment

Jennifer Lopez will reportedly be earning $12 Million dollars for her role as an American Idol judge.  Let assume only the tax cut for “the rich” is allowed to expire.  What would her tax bill look like with our without the bush tax cuts?

Assume she earned no other sources of income in 2010, $11,750,000 of her salary would be taxed at the highest rate. ($12,000,000 – $250,000 = $11,750,000).   The highest tax bracket with the Bush tax cuts the rate is 36%, without the tax cuts its 39.6%.

So the big picture is this:

With Bush tax cuts:  $11,750,000 * 36% =$4,230,000
Without Bush Tax cuts:  $11,750,000 * 39.6% = $4,653,000

That’s what the whole argument is about.  Should a person earning $12 Million be paying taxes in the amount of $4.2 Million or $4.6 Million.  Either way, no one is getting a free ride.

TurboTax says “Print Return, Use White Out to Fix Mistakes”

August 19, 2010 Leave a comment

After recently closing on a new real estate property, I fired up TurboTax to try to claim my share of the $8,000 First Time Home Buyer’s Credit.  I entered by purchase date and TurboTax said I was inelligable for the rebate.  I know that I am so I searched the Inuit help pages and found this:

Then, to my amazement, it says to print out the return with the incorrect date and use white out to fill in the correct date:

Seriously TurboTax?  Print out my return and use whiteout on it?

iPhones Custom URL Keyboard

August 14, 2010 1 comment

I didn’t notice this before but iOS 4 brings up a new keyboard layout when it is expecting you to enter a URL. It makes sense and I should have thought of this sooner but when you entering a URL that cannot contain spaces why should the space bar take up so much valuable screen space.

iPhone Vibrating Fix

August 8, 2010 Leave a comment

If your iPhone stops vibrating, just give it a few stiff wacks on the back and it’ll work again.  I just tried it on my iPhone and I was amazed it worked.  I got the solutions from http://www.tipstrs.com/tip/6402/iPhone-vibrate-not-working.  Amazing.
